Weather Forecast Office
Overview
A strong arctic cold front tracked across SE Michigan during the evening hours of December 4th, leading to numerous snow squalls and peak wind gusts of 40 mph to localized 50+ mph. Snowfall accumulations within these snow showers varied widely across the CWA, but storm totals generally fell within the 1 to 4 inch range. The exception to this was in the Thumb region where a deformation axis/pivot point existed downwind of an ice-free Saginaw Bay. Snowfall reports in Huron County ranged between 8 to 10 inches. A total of 3 Snow Squall Warnings were issued due to near white out conditions and rapid snow accumulations on roadways, most intense between the M-59 and I-96 corridors. This was the most Snow Squall Warnings issued in one day by NWS Detroit since their inception in 2018. NWS employees reported 30-minute snowfall totals of 1.4" in Linden and 1.9" in Holly in the squalls.
