...STRONG WINDS WHIP SOUTHEAST LOWER MICHIGAN ON SATURDAY...

A VERY STRONG AND TIGHTLY WRAPPED STORM SYSTEM MOVED ACROSS THE UPPER
GREAT LAKES THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SATURDAY. THIS SYSTEM USHERED IN
VERY HIGH SOUTHWEST WINDS. BY NOON THE WINDS HAD PICKED UP AT MOST
LOCATIONS...GUSTING TO AT LEAST 30 MPH. THE 2PM TO 5PM WINDOW SAW
THE HIGHEST WINDS ACROSS OUR REGION. WINDS WERE VERY STRONG DURING
THIS TIME FRAME...WITH SUSTAINED WINDS FROM 35 TO 45 MPH AND GUSTS
WELL OVER 50 MPH. WIDESPREAD DAMAGE WAS REPORTED. ALL 17 COUNTIES IN
SOUTHEAST LOWER MICHIGAN...FROM BAY COUNTY SOUTH TO LENAWEE AND
MONROE COUNTIES...EXPERIENCED WIND DAMAGE. CENTRAL DISPATCH FROM
EACH COUNTY RECEIVED NUMEROUS REPORTS OF POWER LINES...SMALL
TREES...AND LARGE BRANCHES DOWNED FROM THE HIGH WINDS. BY 5PM THE
WINDS CAPABLE OF THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE HAD SUBSIDED...HOWEVER VERY
GUSTY WINDS CONTINUED WELL INTO THE EVENING HOURS.


THE FOLLOWING ARE WIND REPORTS RECEIVED FROM OFFICIAL NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SITES...TAKEN ON
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2004 THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST LOWER MICHIGAN. THE
WIND SENSOR AT THESE SITES ARE LOCATED ABOUT 7 FEET OFF THE GROUND.
THE GUSTS WITH AN ASTERISK INDICATE SITES WHERE THE PEAK WIND GUST
IS ONLY RECORDED AT THE TIME OF OBSERVATION AND MAY NOT REPRESENT
THE HIGHEST WIND GUST AT THE SITE.

INSTRUMENTS WHICH ARE IN MOST CASES MOUNTED ON THE SPOTTERS ROOFTOP.
THE BELLE ISLE REPORT...HOWEVER...WAS MOUNTED 60 FT ABOVE THE DETROIT
RIVER AT THE DOSSIN MUSEUM.
