The Northland has had near record amounts of snowfall this winter. This page contains rankings of the top snowiest seasons for select locations. The time range for the records below encompass from July to June of each season listed, not just the "meteorological" winter period of December-January-February. Snowfall records for the Duluth Area go back to 1885, or about 137 full seasons of history as of the 2022-2023 winter. Snowfall observations have been taken at the property now known as the Duluth International Airport since 1941, with various locations closer to Lake Superior before this time period. Data goes back to 1939, with the observations between 1939-2005 taken at an observation site 6 miles north of Bayfield. Data between 2008-present is taken at the Bayfield Fish Hatchery just south of town. Two seasons, 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 are missing, but based on surrounding observations they were likely not close to the top 10 seasonal snowfalls.
