Pacific Storm to Impact California; Severe Weather in the ArkLaTex; Critical Fire Weather Persist in the Southern Plains

A Pacific storm with atmospheric river will bring heavy mountain snow and strong winds to the Sierra Nevada and heavy rainfall over parts of coastal southern California through Thursday. Severe thunderstorms are likely in portions of the Southern Plains into the MS Valley late Wednesday. NWS Corpus Christi Student Volunteer Program - Summer 2025

The National Weather Service at Corpus Christi, TX Student Volunteer Program is designed for current college students majoring in meteorology, atmospheric science, or hydrology. Our application deadline for this year is February 24, 2025 for a start date in early June 2025. Selected candidates will be notified by mid-March.

 

Description: The Student Volunteer Program is an opportunity for students to learn about the structure and mission of the NWS. The program is structured to provide insight into what it's like to work at a weather forecast office as a meteorologist. Selected students will be given hand-on experience with numerous NWS Weather Forecast Office functions and duties which include but are not limited to: local research projects, outreach events, and observation of and participation during high impact weather events. Students will also be able to participate in forecasting exercises, storm surveys, partner briefings, and mock NWS interviews; all while working alongside our team of meteorologists.

Length of internship: There is flexibility in start and end dates but in the past most students start in early June and end in late August. There is also flexibility in how many days a week you come to the office but past students have generally averaged 8-16 hours a week at the office.  

 

Eligibility: Full time students majoring in meteorology, atmospheric science, or hydrology. Preference will be given to those who have at least completed their sophomore year of undergraduate studies. You do not need to receive course credit through your school to be eligible, however, for graduating seniors, you may be able to work with your school advisors and the student volunteer team to get course credit for an internship.
