Winter 2000-'01 was an Enso neutral winter and one of the snowiest ever in the Lake Erie snowbelt of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. The snow and cold started in mid November and charged into the new year. Aside from one warm and wet storm system in mid December, it was nearly non-stop winter through mid January. The lake effect snow just before Thanksgiving in Ashtabula and Erie County, PA was the biggest snow of the year with over 40 inches in some areas. Many areas in the snowbelt exceeded 100 inches of snow before the new year began. There was a reprieve from the snow in February which was warm and relatively dry, but the northwest flow and winter weather returned with a vengeance in March. March became the snowiest to date in Cleveland with 26.7 inches of snow. Erie, PA exceeded their snowiest winter on record to date by notching 149.1 inches. Seasonal snow totals outside of the snowbelt were near normal, generally 30-50 inches.
