...SUMMER 2022 NORTHERN/EASTERN MAINE SEASONAL CLIMATE NARRATIVE...
TEMPERATURES THIS PAST METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER RANGED FROM NEAR NORMAL
TO AROUND 1 DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL NORTH, AND FROM 1 TO 2 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL SOUTH. PRECIPITATION ALSO HAD A NORTH TO SOUTH GRADIENT WITH
100 TO 130 PERCENT OF NORMAL NORTH, AND 70 TO 90 PERCENT SOUTH.
IN CARIBOU, IT RANKED AS THE 16TH WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD, BUT FELL
WELL SHY OF 2020 AND 2021 WHICH WERE THE 1ST AND 2ND WARMEST SUMMERS
RESPECTIVELY ON RECORD. IN BANGOR, IT RANKED AS THE 10TH WARMEST
SUMMER ON RECORD, AND IN HOULTON THE 14TH WARMEST ON RECORD. IT DID
NOT RANK IN THE TOP 20 WARMEST ON RECORD IN MILLINOCKET WHERE
WEATHER RECORDS EXTEND BACK TO 1903 AND THERE IS A MUCH LONGER
PERIOD OF RECORD THAN THE OTHER CLIMATE SITES.
THE SUMMER STARTED IN JUNE WITH BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. IT WAS
WETTER THAN NORMAL ACROSS THE NORTH AND DRIER THAN NORMAL ACROSS
CENTRAL AND DOWNEAST AREAS. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH WAS
THE 19TH WHEN MANY AREAS DID NOT GET OUT OF THE 40S FOR HIGHS.
JUNE WAS THE 6TH DRIEST ON RECORD AT BANGOR WITH ONLY 1.49" FOR THE
ENTIRE MONTH, WHILE AREAS ACROSS THE FAR NORTH IN THE SAINT JOHN
VALLEY HAD CLOSE TO 130 PERCENT OF THEIR NORMAL RAINFALL.
JULY WAS WARMER THAN NORMAL ACROSS THE REGION BY 1 TO 2 DEGREES.
PRECIPITATION WAS AGAIN ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS MUCH OF THE NORTH, BUT
RANGED FROM ONLY 25 TO 70 PERCENT OF NORMAL IN WESTERN PISCATAQUIS
AND NORTHERN SOMERSET COUNTIES. FROM BANGOR SOUTH TO THE COAST,
PRECIPITATION RANGED FROM 70 TO 90 PERCENT OF NORMAL. IN HOULTON,
6.02" OF RAIN WAS OBSERVED MAKING IS THE 8TH WETTEST JULY ON RECORD.
AUGUST FEATURED BOTH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION
ACROSS THE REGION. TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM AROUND 1 DEGREE ABOVE
NORMAL NORTH TO 3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS INTERIOR DOWNEAST.
RAINFALL IN AUGUST RANGED FROM 75 TO 150 PERCENT OF AVERAGE, WITH
THE GREATEST TOTALS OVER CENTRAL AND LOCALIZED NORTHERN AREAS WITH
TOTALS BEING VERY DEPENDENT ON WHERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY OCCURRED.
AT THE START OF THE SUMMER, IT WAS ABNORMALLY DRY ALONG THE DOWNEAST
COAST. BY EARLY JULY MODERATE DROUGHT WAS OBSERVED ACROSS SOUTHERN
PISCATAQUIS COUNTY, SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL PENOBSCOT COUNTY, AND
ACROSS MOST OF HANCOCK COUNTY. BY THE END OF AUGUST, CONDITIONS
IMPROVED WITH NO DROUGHT OBSERVED ACROSS NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE,
BUT WITH ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL
HIGHLANDS AND DOWNEAST. TOTAL EVAPORATION AS MEASURED AT CARIBOU FOR
THE JUNE THROUGH AUGUST PERIOD WAS APPROXIMATELY 12.86 INCHES. TOTAL
RAINFALL A CARIBOU FOR THIS SAME PERIOD WAS 12.48 INCHES, OR 97
PERCENT OF THE TOTAL EVAPORATION. AT BANGOR, THE TOTAL JUNE THROUGH
AUGUST RAINFALL WAS 8.25 INCHES, OR ONLY 64 PERCENT OF THE PROXY
CARIBOU EVAPORATION (ACTUAL BANGOR JUNE THROUGH AUGUST EVAPORATION
WAS LIKELY SOMEWHAT HIGHER DUE TO WARMER TEMPERATURES AND LIKELY
GREATER SUNSHINE, MEANING AN EVEN LOWER PERCENTAGE OF THE
EVAPORATION THERE).
IN CARIBOU, A TOTAL OF THIRTY TWO 80 DEGREE DAYS WERE OBSERVED THIS
METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER (35 YEAR TO DATE) WHICH IS ABOVE THE LONG TERM
AVERAGE OF 26. NO 90 DEGREE DAYS WERE OBSERVED THIS METEOROLOGICAL
SUMMER, ALTHOUGH ONE 90 DEGREE DAY WAS OBSERVED IN MAY. CARIBOU
AVERAGES TWO 90 DEGREE DAYS EACH YEAR. IN BANGOR, THERE WERE 50
DAYS WITH A HIGH OF 80 DEGREES OR WARMER THIS PAST SUMMER (55 YEAR
TO DATE) WHICH IS ABOVE THE LONG TERM AVERAGE OF 42. THERE WERE
EIGHT DAYS WITH A HIGH OF 90 DEGREES OR WARMER, WHICH IS 2 MORE THAN
THE LONG TERM AVERAGE OF SIX.
