...JULY 2024 CLIMATE NARRATIVE FOR NORTHERN/EASTERN MAINE...
JULY 2024 WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES, HUMIDITY, AND FOR PORTIONS OF THE REGION, RAINFALL.
TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE REGION RANGED FROM 2.0 DEGREES (F) ABOVE THE
30-YEAR 1991-2020 NORMALS OVER DOWNEAST AREAS UPWARDS TO 4 DEGREES
ABOVE AVERAGE ACROSS THE NORTH. IN CARIBOU, IT WAS THE 3RD WARMEST
JULY ON RECORD. MEANWHILE, MILLINOCKET HAD ITS 4TH WARMEST JULY ON
RECORD. HOULTON RECORDED ITS 8TH WARMEST JULY, WHILE BANGOR HAD ITS
9TH WARMEST JULY.
THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 21 DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 80 DEGREES
OR GREATER IN CARIBOU. THIS TIED 2018 FOR THE HIGHEST NUMBER ON
RECORD FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, AS WELL AS FOR ANY MONTH SINCE RECORDS
BEGAN IN 1939. IN HOULTON, THERE WERE ALSO 21 DAYS WITH A HIGH
TEMPERATURE OF AT LEAST 80 DEGREES, WHICH WAS THE 10TH MOST EVER FOR
THE MONTH OF JULY. MILLINOCKET AND BANGOR EACH HAD 24 DAYS RECH 80
DEGREES OR GREATER, WHICH WERE THE 6TH AND 12TH MOST RESPECTIVELY.
FOR THE 2-MONTH PERIOD OF JUNE AND JULY 2024, IT WAS THE WARMEST ON
RECORD IN CARIBOU WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 67.8 DEGREES. THIS
BEAT THE OLD RECORD FROM 2020 BY 0.6 DEGREES. IN HOULTON AND
MILLINOCKET, IT RANKED AS THE 3RD WARMEST JUNE-JULY 2-MONTH PERIOD
ON RECORD. AT BANGOR, IT WAS THE 10TH WARMEST.
RAINFALL FOR JULY WAS NEAR NORMAL FOR THE BANGOR REGION AND THE
NORTH (AROUND 90 TO 110 PERCENT OF NORMAL). ACROSS DOWNEAST AREAS
AND THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, RAINFALL WAS MOSTLY 125 TO 150 PERCENT OF
NORMAL. HOWEVER, A ZONE FROM AROUND DOVER-FOXCROFT TO LINCOLN SAW
RAINFALL UPWARDS OF 250 PERCENT OF NORMAL FOR JULY. THIS WAS MAINLY
DUE TO THE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE BERYL, WHICH DROPPED ANYWHERE FROM
3 TO NEARLY 6 INCHES OF RAIN ON JULY 10TH AND 11TH. IN MILLINOCKET,
6.01 INCHES OF RAIN FELL DURING THE MONTH, MAKING IT THE 3RD WETTEST
JULY ON RECORD THERE. AS SUCH, THE SMALL AREA OF ABNOMRALLY DRY (D0)
CONDITIONS IN EASTERN SOMERSET AND WESTERN PISCATAQUIS COUNTIES AT
THE BEGINNING OF JULY VANISHED BY THE END OF THE MONTH. AT CARIBOU,
TOTAL EVAPORATION FOR JULY WAS 5.40 INCHES.
THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER'S (CPC) FORECAST FOR AUGUST 2024
INDICATES AN ELEVATED CHANCE FOR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR
NORTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE. IN ADDITION, THE CPC IS FORECASTING AN
INCREASED CHANCE OF ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL FOR AUGUST. AT THE START
OF AUGUST, AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM THE UPPER 70S TO
NEAR 80 DEGREES. AVERAGE LOWS START OUT IN THE MID TO UPPER 50S. BY
