...A STATISTICAL PREVIEW OF CARIBOU'S JANUARY WEATHER...

DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE FALLS FROM 21 ON THE 1ST TO A YEARLY MINIMUM OF 19 DEGREES FROM THE 11TH TO THE 28TH, ENDING THE MONTH AT 20.  THE AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE FALLS FROM 3 ABOVE ZERO ON THE 1ST TO ZERO ON THE 13TH THROUGH THE 28TH, ENDING THE MONTH AT 1 ABOVE.

THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE EVER OBSERVED DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY WAS 53 DEGREES ON JANUARY 15, 1995 AND AGAIN ON JANUARY 31, 2013.  THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER OBSERVED IN JANUARY WAS 37 BELOW ON JANUARY 16, 2009.

JANUARY IS ON AVERAGE THE SNOWIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR, ALTHOUGH THE MAJORITY OF THE 40+ INCH MONTHS HAVE OCCURRED IN EITHER DECEMBER OR FEBRUARY. THE AVERAGE SNOWFALL IS JUST OVER 2 FEET (24.9 INCHES).  THE SNOWIEST JANUARY WAS IN 2018 WHEN 59.8 INCHES OF SNOW FELL.  1944 HOLDS THE HONORS FOR THE LEAST SNOWY JANUARY WITH ONLY 2.2 INCHES OBSERVED ALL MONTH.

SINCE 1939 JANUARY HAS BEEN THE COLDEST WINTER MONTH 66 PERCENT OF THE TIME SINCE WEATHER RECORD BEGAN IN THE WINTER OF 1939-1940.

ON AVERAGE THERE ARE 6 DAYS IN JANUARY WITH A SNOWFALL OF 1 INCH OF MORE, 2 DAYS WITH A SNOWFALL OF 3 INCHES OF MORE, AND 1 DAY WITH A SNOWFALL OF 6 INCHES OR GREATER.  THE GREATEST CALENDAR DAY SNOWFALL OF 15.1 INCHES WAS OBSERVED ON JANUARY 9, 1999.

IN MOST YEARS THERE IS A CONTINUOUS SNOW PACK DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY.  THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW OCCASIONS WHEN A VERY LIGHT SNOW PACK HAS ENTIRELY MELTED AWAY, USUALLY DUE TO A WARM RAIN EVENT, BUT IT WOULD BE HIGHLY UNUSUAL TO GO FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS WITH NO SNOW ON THE GROUND DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY.  THE AVERAGE SNOW DEPTH DURING THE MONTH IS 15 INCHES, AND MANY NEARBY WOODED AREAS HAVE A SNOW PACK THAT CAN EASILY BE TWICE WHAT IS OBSERVED AT THE AIRPORT WHERE MUCH OF THE SNOW TENDS TO BLOW AWAY.
