Temperatures continued their trend of near normal readings across
the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area in February. For much
of the month temperatures average below normal, but a warm end to
the month pushed average temperatures closer to normal. A complex
area of low pressure brought a steady period of rain to the
Carolinas and Georgia from February 12th through early on the 19th.
A stalled frontal boundary with weak Rainfall amounts ranged from
waves of low pressure moving across the Southeast U.S. from the 12th
through the 14th. Another system moved over the region on the 18th
and 19th. Total rainfall across the Midlands and Central Savannah
River Area ranged from 2 to 5 inches.

The average temperature at Augusta Regional Bush Field for February
was 51.1 degrees or 2.0 degrees above the normal of 49.1 degrees.

The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport for February was
48.4 degrees or 0.1 degrees below the normal of 48.5 degrees.

Augusta Bush Field received 6.59 inches of rainfall during

Feb 27th: The temperature climbed to 84 degrees. This tied the
record of 84 degrees for the date set in 2011.
Feb 28th: The record high temperature of 88 degrees at Augusta
Bush Field on Sunday February 28th was not only a daily record,
but also a monthly record and winter season record (DEC, Jan, Feb).
The previous record monthly high temperature for February was 86
degrees set in 2018.
The previous winter season record was also 86 degrees last set on
February 21st, 2018.

Feb 28th: The record high temperature of 86 at Columbia Metro
Airport SC on Sunday February 28th was not only a daily record,
but also a monthly record and winter season record (Dec, Jan, Feb).
The previous record monthly high temperature for February was 84
degrees, last set in 2014.
The previous winter season record was 84 degrees, last set in
February 20th, 2014.
Significant Weather Events for February...
Feb 12th-14th: A stalled frontal boundary along the coast of the
southeastern U.S. produced widespread rainfall across the Carolinas
and Georgia. Rainfall amounts ranged from 1 to 3 inches across the
region. This set the stage for another river flood event across the
Midlands and Central Savannah River Area. Additional rain would
fall in a few days that would push many rivers to bankfull or out
of their banks.

Feb 17th-19th: An area of low pressure across the northwest Gulf
of Mexico moved slowly to the northeast. The system moved into
southern Georgia and South Carolina on the morning of the 18th.
By the morning of the 19th, the system was just beginning to move
off the Carolina coast. The system produced another round of
widespread rainfall to the region. Rainfall amounts ranged from
1 to 3 inches. The event combined with the previous event
produced minor to moderate flooding along many of the area rivers.
This produced minor to moderate flooding on many of the area rivers.
The Great Pee Dee River at Cheraw crested in the moderate category
at 36.10 feet on the 17th. The pool elevation at Lake Wateree
crested in the minor category at 102.08 feet on the 19th. Stevens
Creek at Modoc crested in the minor category at 20.05 feet on
the 14th. The North Fork of the Edisto River crested in the
moderate category at 10.33 feet on the 20th. The Congaree River
at Carolina Eastman crested in the moderate category at 120.60 feet
on the 19th. The Congaree River at the Congaree National Park-Gadsden
crested in the minor category at 17.56 feet on the 19th.

La Nina conditions are present. There is a 50 percent chance of
transition from La Nina to ENSO-neutral during the Northern
Hemisphere spring 2021 during April through June.
Equatorial sea surface temperatures are below average from the west-
central to eastern Pacific Ocean.
The tropical atmospheric circulation is consistent with La Nina.
