Snow Across the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast; Unsettled Weather in the West

NEW YEAR'S DAY

The highest temperature ever recorded on New Year's Day is 68F degrees in 1876. The lowest the mercury has ever fallen to on New Year's Day is -8F in 1970. Since the records have moved to the airport, the highest temperature on New Year's Day is 60F set in 1985. Normally, the high temperature averages 33F degrees and the low 19F degrees on New Year's Day.

There is almost an 80 percent chance of precipitation of at least a trace or more on New Year's Day, though not necessarily snow. The most precipitation to fall on New Year's Day fell in 1964 when 0.78" was recorded. This same storm dropped 7.9 inches of snow, the most on New Years Day.
