Snow Across the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast; Unsettled Weather in the West

Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday to celebrate the achievements of the American labor force. US President Grover Cleveland established Labor Day as a Federal Holiday back in 1887, and is celebrated on the first Monday in September. Labor Day can occur between the 1st and 7th of September. The highest temperature recorded on Labor Day was 93F reached several times including: September 3rd, 2018, September 3rd, 1973 and September 6th 1971. The lowest temperature recorded on Labor Day is 42F degrees set on September 2, 1991. The high temperature averages 78F degrees and the low 58F degrees on Labor Day.

 

On Labor Day, September 4th, 1944, a moderate earthquake that registered 5.6 on the Richter Scale was felt at 11:39 pm. The quake was centered near Massena, by the Saint Lawrence River. Perceptible vibrations were felt in homes and buildings. Light furniture was displaced and dishes rattled. 

 

Behind a cold front, a 60 mph wind gust occurred at the Rochester Airport on the Labor Day morning of 2020. Several trees fell through the Genesee Valley.
