Western New York Weather History
JULY 28 1982 Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain caused minor drainage flooding across western New York...and spawned two separate tornadoes in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. The first caused substantial damage to a densely populated area in Jamestown including swirling a garage and small barn into the sky before dropping them in splinters. Huge felled trees caused power outages and damaged homes and cars. The second tornado touched down in the town of Sheridan and caused minimal damage. 1993 Thunderstorms developed over in warm, humid air during the evening hours. The thunderstorm winds downed numerous trees which caused scattered power outages. Wind damage was reported in Salamanca, Little Valley, and Dansville. The thunderstorms produced high up to the size of golfballs which damaged some rooftops and windows in Nunda. 1997 An early morning thunderstorm brought high winds to Chautauqua county. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines. Damage was reported in Dunkirk. In Cassadaga, a large uprooted tree crushed a pickup truck. 1999 An isolated thunderstorm that developed over Cattaraugus County produced damaging winds that downed power lines and tree limbs in Randolph. 2000 An isolated thunderstorm developed in lake breezes during the early afternoon hours. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines in the city of Niagara Falls, Niagara county. Localized poor drainage flooding was reported at College and Highland Avenues. Four tourists visiting the Falls were knocked to the ground when lightning struck a nearby tree near Terrapin Point. The four suffered minor cuts and bruises and were treated and released from a nearby hospital. 2002 Downburst winds accompanying thunderstorms across the southern tier and parts of the Finger Lakes produced isolated downed trees and power lines. Thunderstorms re-developed during the afternoon and evening hours. As many as 15,000 were without power in the southern tier for several hours. A falling tree struck a house in Fredonia. Gusts toppled signs along the Thruway. Several roads were totally blocked by fallen trees. Heavy downpours that accompanied the afternoon thunderstorms resulted in some poor drainage flooding in the Southern Tier. 2006 An area of training thunderstorms brought heavy rains first to portions of the Niagara Frontier during the early morning hours and then to parts of the northen Finger Lakes region later in the morning. Rainfall amounts of two to four inches in a matter of a few hours resulted in flash flooding. Roads and basements quickly became inundated. The flooding wreaked havoc with the morning rush hour in the northern suburbs of Buffalo. |
