1980 Several funnel clouds were observed on grand island, at Youngstown and in the Akron/Newstead area. A home was damaged by winds in Ellicottville. Severe winds hit Salamanca. Tornadoes reportedly touched down in Franklinville where winds cut a 50 foot wide swath through trees, and in Ellicottville where a home and mobile home on Brant hill road were damaged. Fallen trees closed a portion of route 242 in Franklinville as well as several roads in Ellicottville. Large hail was reported at Arcade. Wind damage was reported in scattered areas. 1998 Thunderstorms which rolled across the western southern tier during the late afternoon hours produced damaging winds in Frewsburg and golf-ball sized hail in Salamanca. 1999 Violent thunderstorms moved across the Niagara Peninsula into Niagara county. The thunderstorms produced damaging winds which downed tree limbs and power lines in Lewiston. Downpours which accompanied the thunderstorms resulted in poor drainage flooding. 2000 Thunderstorms crossed Niagara county during the evening hours. The thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines in Lockport and Niagara Falls. Power outages were reported in the Towns of Niagara and Lewiston. In Akron, Erie county, two golfers, both men, were struck by lightning while on the course. Both were admitted to the hospital where one was listed in serious condition. 2005 Slow moving thunderstorms during the late afternoon hours produced torrential rains of three to four inches across parts of the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes. In South Bristol, Ontario county, the intersection of Hicks and Seneca Point Roads was closed until crews could clear mud and debris carried by flood waters. In Centerville, Allegany county, a bridge was washed out on Pratt Road. 2006 Thunderstorms developed across the region as an upper level trough crossed during the afternoon hours. One and a half inch hail fell in Henrietta. In Rushford, the thunderstorm winds downed power lines. A house was struck by lightning and set ablaze in the town of West Clarksville. The house was destroyed and left unlivable. A family of three was left homeless. 2008 A line of severe thunderstorms developed over the extreme western part of the state and tracked eastward across the region. The thunderstorms brought another round of damaging hail and thunderstorm winds to western and central New York. Trees and power lines and poles were downed by the wind gusts estimated between 60 and 65 mph. Scattered power outages were reported by the utility companies with tens of thousands of customers affected throughout the region. |
