JULY 10 1966 Squall winds in thunderstorms uprooted trees causing power failures and damaging buildings. Damage was estimated at $100,000 in the Town of Tonawanda where a large section of roof was torn off Cardinal O'Hara High School. Twenty-five persons were injured when gusts overturned a bus on the thruway in the Town of Lancaster.
Morning thunderstorms caused continuous lightning resulting in many fires in Amherst. Streets and basements were flooded. In the afternoon, thunderstorms dropped 2-1/2 inch hailstones in parts of Erie and Niagara counties. Two persons were killed by lightning in Batavia.
Heat wave..July 4th-10th...for seven consecutive days the temperature reached or exceeded 90 degrees. This is the longest string of consecutive days of maximum 90 degrees or higher in the history of record keeping at Buffalo. On each of the seven days the high temperature tied or broke the previous record maximum temperature. 92 on the 4th exceeded 91 set in 1897...95 on the 5th tied 95 set in 1911...97 on the 6th exceeded 93 set in 1944...94 on the 7th exceeded 93 set in 1944...96 on the 8th exceeded 92 set in 1897...92 on the 9th tied 92 set in 1955...95 on the 10th tied 95 set in 1897. The 97 degree reading on the 6th also established a new record for the highest temperature ever reached during the month of July. 1989 Afternoon thunderstorms downed trees and caused scattered power outages in Lewis County. In Newfield, a tree was downed onto a trailer. Wind damage was also reported in New Bremen. 2001 Strong thunderstorms moved across parts of the western southern tier and Finger Lakes during the late evening hours. The storms downed trees and power lines in Chili, Monroe county, Canandaigua, Ontario county, and Panama, Chautauqua county. 2005 Slow moving thunderstorms produced two to two and a half inches of rain in an hour over parts of Livingston and Monroe counties. Creeks overflowed, and roads and homes flooded. The basements of the Town Hall and Courthouse in Livonia, Livingston County were flooded with five feet of water. The heavy rains caused more erosion damage to Stone Hill Road. Lightning struck a home in Caledonia, damaging the brick chimney and the electronic equipment in the house. A building in Livonia was totally destroyed by a fire started by lightning.
