Western New York Weather History
JANUARY 20
1963 The temperature increased during the evening of the 19th under the influence of light southerly winds. Maximum temperature of 39 degrees at Buffalo was observed at 2 and 3am on the 20th. Winds shifted to southwest at 5am and increased. (Average wind 22 mph west southwest, fastest mile 45 mph southwest, peak gust 60 mph southwest at 7:34pm est.) temperature fell steadily during the day to a low of 9 degrees above zero at midnight.
Snowstorm...Winds of near 40 mph were combined with a total of 8.8 inches snowfall at the Buffalo Airport for the day. Heaviest snowfalls occurred in Niagara, Genesee, and south Cattaraugus counties. Roads were in very bad condition and very slippery around Buffalo. 1992 Low pressure passed over Lake Erie and produced a general snowfall of 1 to 3 inches. In addition, the southwest winds off Lake Erie resulted in a band of lake effect snow which moved north across Buffalo and stalled over southern Niagara County. Snowfall amounts which were reported were as follows: Town of Tonawanda - 8 inches, Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda - 7 inches. 1995 Over an inch and a half of rain fell over Niagara and Orleans counties in a short amount of time during the morning hours. Storms sewers were unable to handle the volume of water. Water was 12 to 18 inches deep in parts of both counties flooding lawns, roads and basements. Severe flooding in Albion resulted in a state of emergency being declared in the village. Water damage was reported at the Royalton Hartland Junior-Senior High School in Gasport and the Middleport Elementary School, both in Niagara County. 1996 A cold westerly flow across Lake Ontario set up following the passage of a strong cold front. Rain turned to sleet and snow then a lake effect squall developed. Six inches of snow fell in Highmarket and Adams, while ten inches was reported in Redfield. 2000 Low pressure moving up the east coast brought a general snowfall to the area. The northerly flow across Lakes Erie and Ontario enhanced snowfall amounts and seven to nine inches of snow fell downwind of the lakes. Snowfall amounts included: 9" at Stockton and Hilton and 7" at Perinton, Clyde, Fair Haven and Oswego.
