Western New York Weather History
FEBRUARY 24
1962 The snowstorm of the 23rd and 24th was accompanied by high winds and much drifting. Heaviest accumulations were in built up areas where buildings acted as snow fences. Dock damage along Lake Erie by river ice was reported as high as $20,000. Total snowfall for the two days was 10.6 inches. 1975 A small tornado in the village of Allegany, Cattaraugus county, caused two minor injuries, uprooted more than eighteen trees, destroyed one barn, and damaged eight mobile homes--some overturned. 1997 A strong west to northwest flow developed behind a fast moving cold front which gave a general one to three inch snowfall to the area. An intense single band of lake effect snow then set up over Oswego county downwind of Lake Ontario. Snowfall rates of two inches per hour were common within this band. Snowfall totals were as much as 12" in Oswego and 8-12" over much of the county. 1998 A slow moving coastal storm off the New England coast brought heavy, wet snow to the eastern Lake Ontario region. Specific snow measurements included: in Oswego County 16 inches at West Monroe, 12 inches at Hastings, 10 inches at Redfield, and 8 to 12 inches at Oswego; in Lewis County 22 inches at Montague, 14 inches at Castorland; 12 inches in Highmarket and Lowville and 10 inches at Barnes Corners; and in Jefferson County 8 inches at Watertown.
