1997

6TH-8TH…The ice bridge across the Niagara Gorge of the 1996-97 winter was one of the thickest in years. Gale force winds forced large amounts of ice over the ice boom. Ice piled up 100 feet deep in the Niagara Gorge, flooding the Ontario Power generating station. The Maid of the Mist facilities on both sides of the gorge were damaged. Two of the boats were damaged as well. On the U.S. side, some of the walkways for the Cave of the Winds were relocated by the ice and the elevator in the Observation Tower at Prospect Point was shut down after its well flooded. People have been banned from walking onto the ice since three were drowned in 1912.
