On Thursday, January 28th a major winter storm impacted the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain created many hazards across the area. Most locations experienced at least a brief period of sleet or freezing rain, but most of the significant ice accumulations were focused on the southeast Texas Panhandle. Elsewhere, heavy snow developed and dumped up to 13 to 14 inches of snow in a few locations. The heaviest snow fell in the western Texas Panhandle with the least amount of snow in the southeast Texas Panhandle. Ice accumulations of over 1 inch were observed in the southeast Texas Panhandle. The snow caused major traffic problems as many highways including interstate 40 were closed across the Panhandles. Below you will find a satellite image showing the snow and ice accumulations across the Panhandles. The blue highlighted area shows where the most snow fell. Snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches were common in this area. The orange area shows where the highest ice accumulations took place. Although some snow did fall on top of the ice. Further below, you will find a few pictures from the snow and ice event. Click HERE to view a table with snow and ice observations. |
