Heavy Rains from the Plains to the East; Fire Weather Risk in the Desert Southwest

Thunderstorms, some severe, may produce heavy to excessive rainfall and isolated flooding over portions of the Southern Plains through Saturday. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will spread east into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Mid Atlantic and Northeast. Peak Winds from Oct 8-9, 2016 Across Southeast Virginia and NE North Carolina

The combination of Hurricane Matthew becoming extra-tropical well south of the area, combined with strong high pressure moving into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes created strong winds across SE Virginia and NE North Carolina. There were widespread gusts of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts in the Tidewater and NE NC of 50 to 70 mph.
