What is an Integrated Warning Team (IWT)?

An IWT a group of people/entities from many professions with a common goal: Enhancing preparedness and response to high-impact weather events.

An IWT Workshop is a meeting of IWT team members to discuss best practices, challenges, and ways to improve preparedness and response, and specifically to disseminate a unified message during severe/high-impact weather events. Anyone who works to protect people’s lives during weather events can count themselves as part of this Integrated Warning Team.

What is the goal of the Integrated Warning Team Workshop?

  • Bring officials from NWS, EMAs, and broadcast media together with other partners.
  • Discover the different goals and responsibilities of team members and the challenges in meeting those goals.
  • Discuss high-impact events and the warning process (what went right/wrong?)
  • Determine best practices for future events based on this feedback.

Overall, the goal is to forge a more cohesive and mutually beneficial relationship between team members, which allows for a faster and more collaborative response to high-impact weather events. Public safety is the primary driver, not individual organization's goals.
