Overview

Thunderstorms developed in arced bands during the warmth of the afternoon ahead of a strong low in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Several storms attained severe intensity, primarily over western Kentucky. The primary severe weather hazard was damaging winds, however there was a "landspout" tornado in southeast Missouri. A "landspout" tornado refers to a tornado spawned by a non-supercell thunderstorm. It usually occurs during the intense updraft stage of a developing shower or thunderstorm. It is typically not as long-lived or as strong as a supercell tornado, but it can be very impressive-looking.
