August 2019 Climate Review: Temperatures finished near to slightly above normal. The hottest stretch occurred mid month from August 12-20, which included 4 straight days reaching 95 degrees in Paducah (Aug 17-20). The coolest temperatures of the month occurred as less humid air worked in August 28-29, resulting in refreshing night time temperatures in the 50s.

Precipitation varied across the region, which is typical during the summer time convective season. A large portion of the region finished wetter than normal. This included Paducah, which notched its record 12th consecutive month with above normal precipitation. It also marks the end to the wettest 12 month period on record for Paducah. 78.08” of precipitation has occurred from September 2018 through August 2019. The previous wettest 12 month period was 77.26” from February 2011 through January 2012.

The drier than normal locations in August included a portion of southeast Missouri around the Cape Girardeau area and sections of southwest Illlinois including the Carbondale area. Some of these areas received less than 2 inches of rain.
