Mission Statement

The Software Branch (OPS23) is one of four branches in the Field Systems Operations Center (FSOC) of the Office of Operational Systems (OOS).

The Software Branch provides technical software support to NWS field operations. These services include development of software enhancements and maintenance fixes for existing NWS observation and dissemination systems and expert technical software support to field users. The branch maintains the system baselines in an internal configuration management system.

The Software Branch is responsible for providing software support for the following NWS operational systems:

  • Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS)
  • Radiosonde Replacement System (RRS)
  • NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Console Replacement System (NWR/CRS)
  • Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS)
ASOS Development System

The ASOS software group of the Software Branch of the Field Systems Operations Center (FSOC) provides software development and maintenance in support of the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS). The group receives requirements from the ASOS Configuration Control Board (ACCB) and monitors contract tasks to ensure high quality software is produced on time and within budget. The ASOS contractor, Prism Communications, Inc. is certified at Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 3. The ASOS software group also provides analyses of problems found with the operational software, and maintains in-house the ASOS Operations and Monitoring Center (AOMC) software and the ASOS Sensor Emulator (ASENSE) software.RRS Consoles

The RRS software group provides software development and maintenance in support of the Radiosonde Replacement System (RRS). The combined team of Government and contract staff utilizes processes meeting or exceeding all the Software Engineering Institute CMM Level 2 guidelines.

CRS Console

The CRS software maintenance group provides software maintenance support and site support for the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Console Replacement System (NWR/CRS) and the AWIPS NOAA Weather Radio With All-Hazards VTEC Enhanced Software (NWRWAVES). The group is also responsible for maintaining the operational documentation for these two projects and for the deployment of CRS software updates.

AWIPS Consoles

The Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) team is the Assistant Contracting Officer Representative (ACOR) for software maintenance and enhancement for the contractor team of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) software and provides software quality assurance monitoring of the contractor.
