August 7, 2023 Severe Thunderstorms

A large complex of severe thunderstorms (called a Mesoscale Convective System, or MCS) developed across southern Middle Tennessee and moved eastward across the state during the late morning and afternoon hours on Monday, August 7, 2023. These storms produced significant and widespread wind damage across southeastern Middle Tennessee, with the worst damage occurring across Cannon, Coffee, Warren, and Van Buren Counties. Six separate microbursts and downbursts were identified that caused most of the significant damage in this area. Peak winds in these microbursts and downbursts were estimated to range from 75 mph up to 95 mph. Outside of the microbursts and downbursts, winds still reached 60 to 70 mph in many areas. In fact, Crossville Memorial Airport in Cumberland County measured the highest wind gusts on record at that location, reaching 64 mph.
