A broken line of showers and thunderstorms moved across southern Wisconsin midday on Tuesday Aug 30, 2016. There was a lot of moisture in the atmosphere so these storms were very efficient rainfall producers and dropped a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Storms merged together and intensified over central and southern Milwaukee County bringing 2 to 3 inches of rain within about 2 hours.

Mitchell International Airport set a record rainfall amount for Aug 30 of 2.09, breaking the previous record of 2.00 inches set in 1956. The average rainfall during the month of August in Milwaukee is 3.97 inches so Tuesday's rainfall was about half of that much all in 1 day. It ranks as the 20th wettest 1 day total during the month of August. The record daily rainfall for any day is 6.81 inches set on Aug 6, 1986.
