Event Overview

 

There was a weak tornado in Martin County on the evening of September 27th. The storm that spawned the tornado was well out ahead of the center of circulation of the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne in the northeast quadrant of the storm. This region of the storm experiences enahnced wind shear, conducive to spawning tornadoes. This tornado was weak, with a short very short track.

This IR satellite shows the center of Jeanne to be still well to our southwest in Georgia when the tornado hit Martin County.

 

Radar Imagery

Click on the Image for a java loop of the Newport radar during the tornado. The loop will depict 0.5 degree reflectivity. Radar did not detect any strong rotation with this storm.

            REPORT BY MARTIN COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT OF A POSSIBLE 
            TORNADO APPROXIMATELY 8 PM NW OF OAK CITY. 1 HOME WAS 
            DAMAGED WITH THE BACK WALL BLOWN OUT AND THE PORCH BLOWN 
            AWAY. SEVERAL BUILDINGS ON THE PROPERTY WERE DAMAGED 
            INCLUDING SEVERAL GRAIN BINS, 4 TOBACCO BARNS, AND 2 
            PEANUT DRYING SHELTERS. DAMAGE OCCURRED ON EDMONDSON 
            ROAD.
