The remnants of Hurricane Harvey pushed from southwest to northeast across the region on the first day of the month bringing record rainfall to Bowling Green, Louisville, and Lexington. Storm totals from August 31 through September 1 were in the 6 to 8 inch range from Russellville to Hodgenville, and 3 to 6 inches farther northeast through Louisville and Frankfort. Fortunately there had been no heavy rain preceding the event, so flooding was generally minor. Nevertheless, roads were closed in Simpson, Logan, and Metcalfe counties, and water rescues took place in the counties of Barren, Hart, Logan, and Metcalfe.
A second hurricane affected our region when the remains of Hurricane Irma moved in from the southeast on the 12th-13th. However rainfall amounts were less than an inch and no problems arose.
Partly due to the clouds and rain from Harvey and Irma, plus a favorable upper air pattern for cool weather, the first half of the month was unusually chilly for early September. Thirteen of the first 14 days of the month were cooler than normal, peaking on the 7th when most locations fell well into the 40s, including Cynthiana which dropped all the way down to 42°.
After the cool first half of the month, the weather turned on a dime and every day from the 15th to the 29th was warmer than normal. From the 21st to the 27th highs in the 80s were common with occasional forays into the lower 90s.
There was no severe weather during the month other than the flooding on the 1st.
