A dry cold front moved across the area Saturday, January 18th.  The cold air advection continued and strengthened on Sunday, January 19th as an expansive upper trough dug across the Central U.S. allowing for the Arctic surface high pressure to build south across the area. A shortwave trough approached the region from the west Monday, January 20th, which induced a surface low pressure to develop over the West Central Gulf of Mexico. The shortwave trough and surface low moved east Monday night into Tuesday, January 21st.

Snow began to fall across the area Monday evening, becoming heavy and accompanied by sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph over Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas Tuesday morning. This, combined with visibilities of one have mile or less, prompted the first ever Blizzard Warning the National Weather Service Lake Charles, LA has ever issued. The snowfall gradually ended from northwest to southeast Tuesday afternoon and evening.  Total snowfall accumulations ranged from 1-2 inches across Central Louisiana and Inland Southeast Texas to over a foot in spots across South Central Louisiana.

A prolonged period of subfreezing temperatures around 36 to 40 hours prevailed from Monday night through Wednesday afternoon across most of the area. By late Tuesday afternoon, clearing commenced from northwest to southeast while the center of the Arctic surface high pressure settled over the area. This, combined with the extensive snow cover over the area, allowed temperatures to plummet after sunset. Many locations dropped into the teens and even single digits by midnight. By daybreak Wednesday, January 22nd, brutally cold temperatures in the lower to middle single digits were recorded across the I-10 and U.S. 190 corridor of South Louisiana where the most snow had fallen, with all time station record lows established at Lafayette and New Iberia, LA. Further north where less snow had fallen, morning lows ranged in the lower to middle teens. Closer to the coast and near lakes/bays, temperatures dropped into the upper teens to lower 20s.
