Powerful Summer Storms Plow through Southeast Kansas
July 12th 2010
Stronger than normal upper level winds from an associated weather system moved across Kansas on July 12th 2010. The combination of the stronger winds aloft and unstable July air set the stage for significant severe weather. A powerful thunderstorm developed over Southeast Kansas around 7pm and marched southeast across Montgomery and Labette counties producing widespread wind damage with winds speeds of 60 to 75 mph from Cherryvale to Oswego. Several very large tree limbs and power line poles were knocked down. |
Water Vapor Imagery at 7:15 PM shows a strong shortwave moving through western Kansas which helped ignite storms across southern Kansas and Oklahoma. |
Montgomery & Labette County Supercell
A strong and eventually severe supercell thunderstorm matured over Elk and Wilson county and moved eastward and eventually moved southeastward over Montgomery and Labette counties. As it moved across northeast Montgomery county it began producing strong straight line winds causing damage to trees and buildings. In fact, the winds broke several large tree limbs...some of which were 10 to 15 inches in diameter as well as damage to a barn roof. As it moved into Labette county, it started to strengthen, with 75 mph winds reported in Oswego as the storm produced a swath of damage located from south of highway 400 and north of highway 160. This damage included power lines, trees, and poles down as well as several power outages. The storm eventually moved into Cherokee county, Kansas and Ottawa County, Oklahoma and evolved into a bow echo. |

South Central Kansas
At around 3:20 PM, a quasi-stationary boundary that was draped over southern Kansas began to move northward. This movement combined with heating from the day and the limited cap allowed for storms to develop. As the clouds grew at an substantial rate, a funnel cloud was reported in Greenwood county. These storms turned into a cluster of storms which produced some heavy rain across Butler and Marion Counties. |
