Strong Winds and Flooding

Wreak Havoc On Central and

South Central KS

June 13-14, 2010

With plenty of warm, moist air near the ground and a nearly stationary front draped across eastern Kansas on Sunday, thunderstorms developed by mid-afternoon and quickly became severe. These storms brought torrential downpours, hail up to one inch in diameter, and gusty winds up to 70 mph. Flooding was reported across much of south central Kansas and caused several creeks and rivers to rise beyond their banks.

The gusty winds caused damage across McPherson County, with reports of structural damage to some homes in Lindsborg and a high school roof partially blown off. In Sumner County, there were reports of a garage being moved and several trees uprooted north of Caldwell.

The strongest thunderstorms were producing rainfall rates of 3 to 4 inches per hour during the afternoon and evening. Rainfall totals included several reports over 2 inches for the afternoon and evening hours, which brings some rainfall totals well over 3 inches for the day. The image below shows rainfall totals from 4:30pm on the 13th to 3:45am on the 14th.
