Nocturnal Mesoscale Convective System moves across South Central Kansas during the early morning hours on June 7th, 2010
In the early morning hours of June 7th, a very large Mesoscale Convective System (MCS), moved across south central KS. This system began as a cluster of thunderstorms across northwest Kansas. As this cluster moved eastward, it came across an axis of very unstable air and strong moisture transport. Both of these feed the storms which allowed it to increase in size and intensity. The axis of the instability forced the system to switch from an eastward propagation to the southeast. The MCS intensified over Reno and Harvey Counties and lasted all the way to the Oklahoma border. Strong, damaging winds and quarter size hail were the main threat for this system. Trained spotters and law enforcement reported between 60 to 70 MPH winds as it hit the city of Wichita. Also received a report of quarter size hail in Wellington, Kansas. |
