Severe Weather Hits

South Central and Southeast KS

May 10th, 2010

A strong surface low pressure system tracked across southern Kansas on Monday, May 10th. Rich moisture from the Gulf of Mexico surged northward, making it into southern Kansas by late afternoon. A dryline developed across western Oklahoma and extended into south central Kansas, and a warm front stretched from the center of the low in southwest Kansas into south central Oklahoma. Very high levels of instability and shear allowed supercell thunderstorms to develop along and ahead of the dryline, and these storms moved quickly northeastward during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Tornadoes, hail up to 4.25" diameter (between grapefruit and softball size), and damaging winds were reported with many of these supercells, including several tornadoes in western and central Oklahoma. There were a few reports of tornadoes across south central and southeast Kansas as well. These supercells eventually developed into a line of storms that produced large hail and damaging wind through southeast Kansas and into Missouri and Arkansas.

Kingman and Sedgwick County Supercell

A supercell thunderstorm moved into Kingman county from Barber county around 4pm Monday afternoon, this supercell quickly evolved and spawned a tornado. This tornado initially touched down in southwest Kingman County, near Spivey. The tornado then moved to the east northeast, briefly touching down and causing minor damage mainly to trees.

The tornado intensified to EF2 strength around 1.5 miles Southeast of Belmont. The tornado struck a residence, taking the roof off of the home and causing damage to other structures in that area. The tornado again lifted and briefly touched down again as it tracked south of Cheney. The tornado's final touchdown occurred about 6 miles north of Viola where it was rated an EF0, with minor tree damage.

Sumner, Cowley and Chautauqua Counties Supercell

A strong supercell thunderstorm that developed in Woods County, Oklahoma and moved east northeast along the Kansas/Oklahoma border. A tornado caused EF3 damage to a home 2 miles south of Hunnewell which is just across the Oklahoma/Kansas border. The top two floors of a frame house were destroyed, and a mobile home was badly damaged. As the tornado moved into Kansas near I-35 it was at EF2 intensity. As it passed the I-35 Turnpike, it overturned 2 semi trucks and there was significant damage to a line of cottonwood trees about 1.5 miles east of the turnpike before it lifted over southeastern Sumner county.

The next evidence of a touchdown was along the east side of Arkansas City near the intersection of US-166 and US-77 Bypass. The tornado was again rated an EF1 and was 300 yards wide as it damaged a storage shed east of Arkansas City. The tornado weakened to EF0 intensity and continued to briefly touchdown as it moved northeast toward Dexter.  The tornado ultimately lifted completely in the far northwest corner of Chautauqua county about 7 miles southwest of Grenola.
