March 2nd 2008 severe storms...

A powerful upper level low pressure system dove out of the rockies and into the Southern Plains during the afternoon hours of Sunday March 2nd. Strong south winds on Saturday and Saturday night allowed an unseasonably warm and moist airmass to overspread the region. A powerful cold front swept south across Kansas during the afternoon hours on Sunday. Thunderstorms erupted along this front as it surged south.

One of the stronger storms of the day developed over the Oklahoma Panhandle and tracked into South Central Kansas early Sunday evening. This storm produced a large swath of 60 to 70 mph winds across Harper, Sumner, Cowley and Butler counties. These intense winds blew down large tree limbs, tore a roof off a barn near Udall and downed numerous power poles south of Leon in Butler County. In addition, this same storm produce a brief tornado north of Caldwell. Image 1 is a picture of this brief tornado. Image 2 is a radar display of this power storm as it was producing severe winds.
