Overview
A cluster of storms formed in the late afternoon of August 22, 2024 in eastern Colorado followed by a larger supercell in the early evening. The cluster of storms produced golf ball sized hail, two tornadoes that did not impact any structures, and straight-line winds of 110 MPH. The trailing supercell, when it collided with the tail end of the first cluster of storms, also produced straight-line winds around 105 MPH. Both straight-line wind events caused damage to structures and trees.

Summary: Shortly after 5 PM, a small cluster of storms north of Burlington, CO prompted the issuance of the first Severe Thunderstorm Warning of the day. Around 5:50 PM, the Goodland WFO received a report of golf ball sized hail falling from a particularly strong storm on the southern edge of the cluster. Over the next half hour, this storm produced straight-line winds estimated at 110 MPH. These winds snapped 5 wooden power poles, punched in two large metal grain silos, flipped 4 irrigation pivots, destroyed the roof of a shed, and cause numerous other damage. |

Summary: Around 7 PM, a second storm approached Burlington from the southwest. The Burlington airport recorded a 75 MPH gust from this storm. The southwestern storm collided with the tail end of the first cluster of storms (which had weakened, but was still severe) north of Burlington, near the golf course, forcing the winds from both storms to converge. This convergence zone, approximately 1.25 miles wide, had wind gusts estimated up to 105 MPH. Multiple large limbs and sections of tree trunks were snapped, multiple trees were uprooted, and an irrigation pivot was overturned. Due to heavy rain from the first cluster of storms, the soil was saturated prior to the 105 MPH winds occurring, allowing trees to uproot more easily. |
