Tornadoes verified in Summit and Portage Counties in northeast Ohio

 

Four tornadoes were verified in northeast Ohio during the late afternoon of September 10th, 2014. The first tornado touched down in Stow (Summit County) about 522 PM. Tornadoes also touched down in Portage County in the Village of Sugar Bush Knolls about 529 PM, near Streetsboro about 534 PM and near Hiram about 554 PM. All were EF0 rated (click here for information on the Enhanced Fujita Rating Scale). The storms moved from southwest to northeast at about 30 mph. There were 5 homes damaged in Stow, one significantly. Other damage in Stow and elsewhere was mostly tree damage.

SUMMARY...
THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN AS AN EF0 AT THE STOW-MUNROE FALLS HIGH
SCHOOL PROPERTY BUT CAUSED NO NOTABLE DAMAGE. THE TORNADO CONTINUED
ABOUT A HALF MILE NORTHEAST INTO THE QUAL HIGHLANDS NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR
THE INTERSECTION OF BERWIN DRIVE AND BUNKER LANE. ALONG THE NEARLY
HALF MILE PATH OF THE TORNADO MUCH OF THE DAMAGE WAS TO TREES THAT
WERE KNOCKED DOWN OR UPROOTED. THE TORNADO ALSO CAUSED DAMAGE TO
FIVE HOMES. SOME SHINGLE AND MAINLY MINOR STRUCTURE DAMAGE OCCURRED
TO FOUR OF THE HOMES. ONE HOME SUSTAINED NOTABLE DAMAGE TO THE ROOF
AND CHIMNEY. THE MAX PATH WIDTH WAS 50 YARDS AND THE MAXIMUM
ESTIMATED WIND SPEED WAS 85 MPH. THE TORNADO WAS ON THE GROUND FOR
LESS THAN 2 MINUTES.

NUMEROUS TREES. THE MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH WAS 50 YARDS AND THE MAXIMUM
ESTIMATED WIND SPEED WAS 85 MPH. THE TORNADO WAS ON THE GROUND FOR 3
MINUTES.

MPH NEAR ALLYN ROAD NORTHWEST OF HIRAM. THE TORNADO MOVED NORTHEAST
TO NEAR WINCHELL RD AND THEN LIFTED. THE TORNADO CAUSED A FEW TREES
TO UPROOT AND BROKE LARGE BRANCHES.  MINOR DAMAGE OCCURRED TO A FEW
HOUSES ON WINCHELL ROAD.  THE MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH WAS 25 TO 50 YARDS
AND THE MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WIND SPEED WAS 74 MPH.
