Severe Thunderstorms in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest; Critical Fire Weather in the West; Dangerous Heat in the Central and Eastern U.S.

Severe thunderstorms are likely today across the northern Plains and into the upper Mississippi Valley. Gusty winds and dry conditions will result in widespread critical fire weather through Saturday across parts of the Four Corners region and the Great Basin. Wind Advisory in effect today from 11 AM to 11 PM for the Tahoe Basin below 7000 ft, northeast California, the Sierra Front, and the NV Basin and Range in Nevada, and Mono below 7000 ft and eastern Alpine counties in California. Wind gusts up to 45 mph for the Tahoe Basin, and up to 50 mph for western NV and NE CA. Wind prone locations will have gusts up to 65 mph. Wave heights of 2 to 4 feet for Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake. Areas of blowing dust reducing visibilities down to 1-3 miles in the NV Basin and Range.
Red Flag Warning in effect for western Nevada, eastern Lassen County, and Alpine and Mono Counties until 12 AM tonight. Wind gusts up to 50-60 mph for wind prone areas, ridges to 70-80 mph with humidities of 5-15% across the area. Rapid fire growth potential in breezy winds. Avoid dragging trailer chains, target shooting or driving in dry grass to prevent starting a spark.
