Dangerous Cold for Most of the Eastern U.S.; Critical Fire Weather for Southern California

Arctic air encompassing the eastern two-thirds of the United States will persist with a slow return to normal temperatures expected by the end of the week. The below average temperatures will prolong the travel impacts and exacerbate the threat from the cold for those with power outages across the Gulf Coast and Southeast. A cold start to the day but it will warm up quite nicely across the region. Near-average highs are expected with breezy north to northwest winds through this afternoon.
Cooler temperatures are expected for Thursday with breezy north-northeast winds. Slight warming returns for Friday before unsettled weather arrives over the weekend and into early next week. Rain and snow chances return late Saturday and continue into early next week.
