Atmospheric River to Begin to Impact the Northwest U.S.; Gusty Winds in the Northeast U.S.

A strong atmospheric river moving into northern California later Tuesday will bring a threat for moderate to heavy rainfall and flooding, gusty to high winds, and mountain snows for parts of the Northwest U.S. through at least Wednesday. Wind and heavy rain is expected to impact Northwest California Tuesday and Wednesday. Secure loose objects and prepare for power outages. Allow for extra commuting time Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Prepare for ponding on roadways, downed trees, or tree debris. If you encounter a flooded road, turn around, don't drown!

The first of a series of systems moving through the area arrives this afternoon and continues overnight. Modeled reflectivity shows rain initially starting in Del Norte and Humboldt, then shifting south into Mendocino overnight. Rain then shifts back north again toward Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties late Tuesday morning as another, stronger front approaches.

A High Wind Warning has been issued for interior Humboldt and Del Norte Counties and a Wind Advisory has been issued for Lake and Mendocino Counties late Tuesday through Wednesday. A High Wind Watch remains in effect for the coastal areas. Downed trees, power outages, and dangerous driving conditions are possible.

A more significant system arrives late Tuesday and continues through Wednesday. Periods of moderate to heavy to moderate rain are likely across the area. Minor urban and small stream flooding, ponding on roads, debris on roads, and rockslides are possible.

Higher than normal tides are forecast for much of the week. Strong south wind will increase tides further, bringing greater risk of coastal flooding. A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for Humboldt Bay between 9 AM and 12 PM Wednesday. Impacts to King Salmon and the Arcata Bottoms are possible. Potential impacts continue through Friday. Storm surge and large surf may cause impacts to the Mendocino and Del Norte coasts Wednesday and Thursday.
